Weekend with my parents

My mom and dad came for a visit this weekend. They arrived around noon Friday. I was glad they came.

We didn't do much but hang out at the house and do a few little things. Saturday I made some delicious french toast for breakfast that everyone enjoyed. We met someone my dad works with at a little mom and pop chicken place in Roanoke, Babe's. They only have two things on the menu: fried chicken and chicken fried steak. It's served family style, the chicken is half a chicken and the steak is HUGE. That was almost the best fried chicken right next to my mom's. It's pretty darn close to hers though. Her gravy is what makes her chicken better. You can't have fried chicken without chicken gravy! On the way home we stopped by Sheridan's for some frozen custard. You can't beat that Saturday. Fried chicken and frozen custard. Yum.

Mom and I decided we were going shopping when we made it home. We stopped by a children's furniture store and mom said I had to bring Marty back. We went to the mall where I walked out with nearly $200 worth of maternity clothes that I needed badly. I took mom to Joann to look at their cross stitch patterns. Then two very tired women made it home.

I was sad to see them go, I teared up waving goodbye in the driveway. They're great parents. They're up for just about anything and I like that. It was an excellent weekend.

Sunday afternoon I took Marty back to the furniture store. We have the set we would like to have picked out already. Call us crazy, but we loved it.

How we told our family

Since we were planning on going home June 12-15, we figured we would go ahead and share our news. The family was throwing a surprise retirement party for Marty's dad on Saturday, then Father's Day was Sunday along with it being my birthday. Perfect.

We left Thursday morning for home (DeRidder, LA for those that don't know). It takes about 6 hours. We had the entire drive to figure out how we would tell. We didn't even talk about it! I guess we were still soaking in the news. I even had Marty stop at a Walgreen's so I could pick up some more tests!

We arrive at my parents' house that afternoon. We do the usual. Let the dogs out to run around with no leashes in the back, talk about the drive, and what our plans are for the weekend. I snuck inside with one of the tests and went to the back. I went to the living room to get my sister. I had her look at the test. She got a HUGE grin on her face. I'm pretty sure she's happy! She's either really excited about the baby or excited she found out first. haha She's excited about the baby.

I sat down on the couch next to Marty. We're talking about how my parents need to come visit. My mom had two surgeries on her back and neck which made her unable to travel. We told them they should try coming in February. Blank stares. I'm grinning. Mom starts counting on her fingers and it hits her. They laugh and smile about it. What happens after that is a fog. It's been quite a few weeks since this actually happened and I was on Cloud 9. It's hard to remember details. I'm sorry for that.

How we told Marty's parents:
Since my father-in-law's party was a surprise, we had to hide why we weren't spending much time with them. My mother-in-law knew what was going on. We were going to wait until after the party Saturday afternoon to tell them. But my parents decided to have them over for dinner and birthday cake Friday night. I was helping with dishes afterward and whispered to Marty I couldn't hold it in any longer. We have to tell.

We sat back down at the table after we had some ice cream cake. Thank you Mom! Me and Marty on one side, his dad sitting next to him, and his mom across from us. We did the same bit we did with my parents. Why don't you come visit us in February? Blank stares. Well, you know, there are three of us sitting over here, you'll just have to wait a while to meet the third one. Ms. Becky squeals with joy. Perfect reaction from her.

The rest of Marty's family found out at the retirement party through whispers. We told his sister and grandmother ourselves before that, so it was more than us telling!

Everyone is thrilled about this baby. Which makes it even more exciting for us. There are five grandchildren on my side and seven on Marty's side. Only one girl on each side. Quite a few people have said it's a girl. We should know in about 9 weeks!

How we found out

I suppose the best way to start this blog is to tell the story of how we found out I was pregnant. It's a great story I will never forget.

Quite a few people knew that we were trying. We had been trying for a year, actually. I had an appointment scheduled with my ob/gyn for June 11th. We were going to talk about testing me for infertility. I had put getting pregnant in the back of my mind knowing we were headed toward some answers. I wasn't paying any attention to my body.

I woke up Sunday, June 8th, and Marty was already in the living room having his morning coffee. I decided to test. I took a Dollar Tree test and saw the faintest second line. Whatever. Those tests cost a whole dollar, they can't be reliable. I'm still half asleep and maybe it's my eyes playing games with me. I took a digital. Sat down and made myself as comfortable as possible in the bathroom. I know how long "Not Pregnant" takes to show up. It's torture. I sat down, then immediately looked up. Pregnant. No freaking way. I grabbed the stick, focused, and sure enough that's what it said. I somehow screamed a quick "Marty" and took off running to the living room.

We ran into each other in the hallway, which is not that far from the master bath. It was enough of a run for me to be bawling and shaking. I so gently shoved the stick in Marty's face. He tells me I said "I've never seen this before." We grabbed each other and hugged. I could feel Marty shaking with excitement. I jump up and down and repeat "Oh my God, Oh my God." The best feeling, EVER.

We went about our day. I had to study and Marty volunteered to go grocery shopping to give me some quiet time to study. He got home and I told him all I could think about was me being pregnant. He said "Me too, honey. I'm happy."

It was also the best birthday present ever. My birthday is June 15th, one week after we found out. I was on cloud 9 with this news. More to come about how we told the family!
